Fitness Testing in 2nd Grade

This week we began fitness testing. The fitness test is made up of four components to test the fitness level of each student.  The four components are:


  • Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER)
    • The objective of the PACER is to run as long as possible back and forth across a 20 meter space at a specified pace that gets faster after each minute.
  • Partial Curl Ups
    • To measure abdominal strength and endurance
  • 90° Push Ups
    • To measure upper body strength and endurance by the maxim number of push ups completed correctly.
  • V-sit and Reach
    • To determine lower back and hamstring flexibility
The student score will fall into one of three health zones:

  • Needs Improvement Zone (N)
    • Students scoring in this zone fall below the fitness level established as a healthy level of fitness. A score in this zone indicates students could be at risk for potential health-related problems. With appropriate physical activity, students can achieve a higher level of fitness considered appropriate for good health. 
  • Healthy Fitness Zone (H)
    • Students scoring in this zone fall in an area determined suitable for good health and fitness. Students should be encouraged to continue to be physically active in order to maintain or improve current level of fitness. 
  • High Fitness Zone (HFZ
    • Students scoring in this zone demonstrate an excellent level of health-related fitness. Students should be encouraged to continue to be physically active in order to maintain a high level of fitness
We will be fitness testing for the next few weeks in 2nd grade.  We encourage all of our students to do the test to the best of their ability.  Also students need to wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes.

Ipads and Health

This week we started incorporating health lessons into our Physical Education classes. Once a month we will be doing a health lesson using the ipads.  The student seem to really enjoy using the ipads to watch a short video on the Food Pyramid. (The video is at the bottom of this page)

Fitness Testing

In a couple of weeks all 2nd graders will begin the fitness test.  The test included are the PACER test, Curl up, Push ups, and v-sit.  We have been practicing some of these during P.E., but students should also practice at home to help increase their strength and flexibility!
